My parents were ride owners and I was only twelve at the time but my whole fammily traveled from show to show. I grew up a carnie, I loved the life. It was the most memorable time of my life. We eventually sold all of our rides but it was a time I will never forget.

I was hired at at very young age to run the Cash Office at Maple Leaf Village Park, Niagara Falls. I was to replace Connie - she was following Hughie to the PNE. I had an accounting dipolma from college and extreme knowledge of the carnival business, that I believe was why I was hired at such a young age with all of that responsibility.(as you might say I was born into the business). I enjoyed the challenge, business and the many people I met while I was at Niagara Falls. I remember 3 great events from that employment. Boy! them Dutch guys were hot - they were building the Giant Wheel for Conklin & Garrett Limited. Secondly, the power failure and of course I was across the street eating dinner with my parents - I ran like hell to get back to the park to be sure all of the Cash was secured (what an employee)(I didn't get to finish my meal) Finally the biggest memory and I got harrased alot about this - Mr.Conklin wanted into the Cash Office - I was not sure if it was him or not so I asked for ID - he did not show me any therefore, needless to say he did not get into his office. We also did alot of charity work in the casino section of the company. We did promo with the Buffalo Sabres. It was a GREAT job even though it was long hours, but I had to give it up because I was in my sister's wedding party and the general manager would not give me the weekend off. I still keep in contact with some people I met in those years. I will look up some pictures and attach at a later day.

I went out with my dad "Jack Houghton" for a few years, then I was called john john and the name has been with me forever. I worked for bernard amusements, conklin bought out left for year and came back. Started working back on bernard unit, gonna leave and, they gave me management for rides, and stayed. I have owned my own equipment, and at the same time ran a division of the western road show as part of management. Until they sold the show and no independents needed and now a part of the other world. I will never forget the people I met and the people that think they know me that is cool because I have met so many that I would only remember some of them. If vanessa is out there @ big M from alberta contact me please!!!!

I worked on Conklin Shows starting in June of 1977, for Frank and Dorothy Eastman. I worked the Colorama Game, and also a water race game. After working for the Eastmans, I worked for Steve and Debbie Dobson. I worked many different games for the Dobson's as well as built new ones. Does anyone remember the Ball in the Box game using a superball. I worked the West, East, CNE, and the south. I was there when Conklin bought Deggler Shows, and remember playing some of the worst mud fairgrounds on Deggler's old route. I worked over in San Juan, and also Santo Domingo. I remember when the show was running out of plush, and Conklin flew over an entire plane full of nothing but plush. That was in 1978, and 1979. In 1980, Myself and my partner, Alex Vauclair who also worked for Conklin and the above mentioned people, stopped working the games, built our own Food Trailer, Western Bar-b-Q, and booked it with Conklin. We played the West, the Eastern Roadshow, and the US with with it. In 1983, we broke away from Conklin, and went independent. We moved to Phoenix Az, and booked as independent operators for some of the biggest Fairs in Arizona and California. We dropped the California route in 1999, and today just do the Arizona State Fair, and some small venues in Arizona. We are the Number 1 Food grosser at the Arizona State Fair, and last year marked our 25th year in the Food Industry, and our 23rd year at the Arizona State Fair. Alex lives in our home in Apache Jct Az, and I live in another home we own in Palm Springs California.
